NMA first started Mountain leader training in 2006 A.D. Mountain Leader Training consists of three components: Mountain Leader Component-1, Mountain Leader Component-2 and Mountain Leader Component-3 or Winter component.

Merits of Mountain Leader Training

  • Promotes mountain tourism by producing Mountain Leaders for the development of mountain tourism.
  • Helps in minimizing the risks of accidents during trekking and mountaineering.
  • Creates jobs for mountain tourism through production of expert human resources for the development of mountain tourism
  • Attracts the tourists in trekking and mountaineering  by producing mountain leaders.
  • Helps in consolidating the position of Nepal in the world tourism market
  • Helps in bringing quality oriented tourists from the world tourism market

Criteria and qualification for participants for Mountain Leader Training

For Nepali Participants:

  • Photocopy of citizenship
  • Recommendation from a trekking company affiliated as resource member of NMA and an experience of five years
  • Holder of a trekking guide license issued by government of Nepal with completion of three years from issued date and an evidence of completion of 10 trekking expeditions.
  • Experienced in First aid
  • Capable of reading, writing and speaking both in English and Nepali
  • If the applicant fails to participate in the second component of training within three years of completing the first summer component training then the applicant has to start from the first summer component of the training.
  • The participants must pass the phase of evaluation after completing the first phase of summer component and before joining the second component training.

For Non-Nepali Participants:

  • The Non-Nepali participants interested to go through Mountain Leader Training should have a valid visa and valid passport.
  • Must have an experience of mountaineering and trekking of three years.
  • Trainees should manage their own insurance, visa or other expenses incurred.

Training Fees:

For Nepali Participants:

  • Component I : Rs.17000
  • Component II : Rs.17500
  • Component III (Winter Component) : Rs.18000

For Non-Nepali Participants:

  • USD 600 - for all components

Mountain Leader Component-1

Qualification to participate in Mountain Leader Component-1 Training: must complete Trekking Guide Course from authorized government institution. 

Time Duration: 12 Days

  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Mountain Leader Component-2

Qualification to participate in Mountain Leader Component-2 Training: Must complete Mountain Leader Component-1

Time Duration: 10 Days

  • Worst-case navigation
  • Problem solving

Total Number of Participants: 20 

Mountain Leader Component-3 (Winter)

Qualification to participate in Mountain Leader Component-3 Training: Must complete Mountain Leader Component-2

Time Duration: 14 Days
